Derek K. Hewitt MD, MPH
Dr. Hewitt grew up in the great Northwest. After completing a 2 year mission for his church, he started college; receiving a BA in English from Brigham Young University and also a BS in Biology from the University of Utah. It was at BYU, while studying Russian, that he met his beautiful wife, Carrie. They moved to Salt Lake City, where he studied Public Health, earning a Masters degree before entering medical school at the UofU. His wife was integral in helping him through medical school. They started a family in Salt Lake and managed apartments during medical school. Dr. Hewitt then entered residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Missouri in Columbia. He finished a 1 year internship in General Surgery, followed by 4 years of training in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. After residency, he was excited to accept a position in Spokane Washington with Spokane ENT. While there he volunteered on the Cleft Palate Board, participating in the care of young patients with ENT issues related to cleft palates. After 3 short years in Spokane, he saw an opportunity to expand his practice and contribute to the growing Quad City area in Yavapai County. The Hewitt's moved to Prescott in late 2011 and have been enjoying the area since. Dr. Hewitt relishes the opportunity to constantly update and improve the care of Otolaryngology in central Arizona. While providing a wide spectrum of general ENT care from pediatrics, ear disease, sinus disease and trauma, he is particularly focused on the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of thyroid nodules, as well as updating the care of allergic disease.
Lest you think all Dr. Hewitt does is study and work, he also enjoys spending time with his family and serving in various capacities with his church. He is discovering the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado via backpacking; and still trying to get up consistently on a surf board in Southern California. Locally, he enjoys time in the gym at the YMCA, as well as biking and hiking the Sierra Prietas, the Bradshaws and the San Fransisco Peaks.
Dr. Hewitt belongs to several professional organizations to help stay abreast of the constant changes in medicine. Following is a list of these professional societies:
